We pause to light a candle for peace in our world.
Light the Peace Candle.
‘The 15th of May, is Nakba Day, the Day of the Catastrophe, which commemorates the displacement of Palestinians that preceded and followed the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. An estimated 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled, and hundreds of Palestinian towns and villages were depopulated and destroyed. The key is a symbol of the Nakba, the Catastrophe, referring to the many Palestinians who still have keys to their homes from which they were expelled in 1948, expecting to return in a few days.’
Let us remember the Palestinians and Israelis in our prayers.
Pray with me.
Holy One. Prince of Peace, Risen Christ, our hearts ache for these Holy Lands and their people. We pray for them and all caught in this conflict of warring madness. Make your presence known. May your justice flow like a river washing all countries free from invaders and occupiers. May your peace shine upon the shores of Galilee. May it be so. Amen.
Active prayer: hand out simple images of a key, printed on coloured paper, one to each person, or group of people. Invite everyone to write their prayer for the situation on their key. These might be posted or gathered with a prayer.
