Prayers for worship Proper 13 — Cara Heafey, UK

Year C – 11th Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 13)

Prayer of approach

Generous Creator, imaginer of the earth in all its rich diversity
You invite us to come as we are,
to receive the gift of abundant life.

Rabbi Jesus, story-teller,
You invite us to come as we are,
to sit at your feet, to still our hearts and listen.

Enlivening Spirit, rule-breaker
You invite us to come as we are
to join the feast, the dance of God.

Prayer of confession

Gracious God
We confess our greed.
To feed our insatiable appetites
we have plundered the earth and its resources,
stripped the forests, polluted the rivers,
depleted the oceans, poisoned the soil,
choked the good clean air.

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy

(or other familiar words including a response from the congregation)

We take and hoard more than we need,
leaving others without enough.

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy

We continue to feed the monsters that enslave us:
the large-scale industries abusing the planet and exploiting the poor
the corporations that value profits over people
the governments that scapegoat the powerless and vulnerable
the companies that profit from war

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy

Merciful God,
we confess our selfish desires
our envy towards our neighbour
our inhospitality to the stranger
our apathy towards the oppressed
our silence in the face of injustice

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy

God of truth,
we confess the lies we tell ourselves
to justify our choices;
the choices which harm us
the choices which harm others

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy

Loving God,
forgive us and renew us.
Open our eyes to the truth,
our hearts to love and be loved,
our hands to give and to serve.

Transform our desires
to reflect the values of your kingdom.
And in this spirit let us pray for a new order
using the words that Jesus taught us:
Our Father…

Assurance of grace

Our God is faithful!
We are forgiven; we are freed
We are beloved; we are blessed
Thanks be to God!
