Toss the globe, activity — Commitment for Life, UK

An all-age activity which can be adapted to focus on any global mission or partnership, highlighting regions of interest. This has been created specifically for the Commitment for Life programme of the United Reformed Church in Great Britain.

Supplies: a blow-up globe

What’s this?  [a globe]

This globe is going to help us find out where you have travelled.  If it comes to you, try and catch it!  Then call out a country to which you have travelled and something you learned while there.  If you have never travelled outside this country, call out a town, region or city you visited and something you learned while there.

Continue for 4-5 throws.

You all have been to some interesting places!

Now let’s see what else we can learn from this globe balloon.

Does anyone know which three countries or areas we are connected to, as a church, through Commitment for Life?  [Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territory]

Can someone find Zimbabwe on the globe?   [Toss the globe to them.]

Can someone tell us something about Zimbabwe?  [in Africa, large debts, water crisis]

Can someone find Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory on the globe?   [Toss the globe to them.]

Can someone tell us something about Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory?  [in the Middle East, where Jesus lived, violence, 1948 Nakba…..]

Can someone find Bangladesh on the globe?   [Toss the globe to them.]

Can someone tell us something about Bangladesh?  [in Asia, was created in 20th century, was part of India, home to the largest refugee camp in the world and areas of severe poverty]

In all three of these countries many people live in poverty and lack justice.

Through Commitment for Life, we can help make a difference through our financial gifts, our prayers, and by learning more about the current situation in each area.

Pray with me.

God, as Christians we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live life in all its fullness.  We pray for the people of  Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territory.  Thank you for the work of Commitment for Life, for the programmes that are supporting people and the environment in areas of greatest need.  Open our hearts and hands to be generous and share your abundance and love.  Amen.
